coastal bedroom

Most of Australia lives within an hour of the beach, so it makes sense that coastal is our most copied bedroom style. The formula is short: white base, blue or green accents, natural fibres, and as much daylight as the room can find. The 45 rooms below run that formula in every direction, from Hamptons glam to kids' bunks.

1. White Coastal Cottage

Huge windows, white walls and ceiling, painted timber boards, then a jute rug and potted plants so the white doesn't glare. Painted floorboards are underrated; they're the cheapest way to lighten a dark room with tired boards.

white bedroom

2. Teen Surfer

Blue and white bedding, glass jars, a surf print and a striped rug. It's a teen room that will survive the surf phase, because underneath the props it's just blue and white.

3. Ancestral Pieces

A vintage headboard, a shabby chic night table, an old mirror, with blue and white pulling the mixed eras together. Inherited and op-shopped furniture suits coastal rooms; the style has always been about houses furnished over generations of summers.

4. Bright Nature

A shell chandelier, a woven rattan headboard and sandy neutrals with green and timber worked through. Everything textural here comes from somewhere near a beach, which is the quiet logic of the whole scheme.

5. Open Windows

Window walls facing the water. If the view exists, the design job is mostly getting out of its way. Curtains in a room like this should be sheer or absent.

6. Blue Beach House

Steel blue walls, vertical shiplap, a white box bed and plank floors, with an accordion divider for shade. Blue walls with white trim is beach-house shorthand everywhere from Byron to Busselton.

blue coastal bedroom

7. Moroccan Seas

Moroccan-patterned pillows and a vintage plate on the wall, folded into a bright coastal base. The patterns fit because Moroccan palettes lean on the same blues and whites.

coastal bedroom

8. Seaside Cottage

Rattan head and foot boards, a wicker bench, a shell chandelier and a textured white rug. Cottage coastal, done without a single anchor motif. Restraint with the nautical props is what separates coastal from theme park.

9. Walkout Balcony

A bedroom opening onto its own balcony. Even a tiny one changes how the room feels, and on warm nights it's the difference between stuffy and sleepable. Adding one is builder-and-council territory, not a weekend job.

10. Canopied Boho

A four-poster dressed in wispy white curtains, with blue accents, silver Moroccan lamps and timber pieces. Canopy fabric moves in any breeze, which does more for the beach-house feel than any decoration standing still.

11. Beach Boys

Wave wallpaper, bunk beds and a rope ladder to the top bunk. Kids' coastal can be as literal as it likes. The rope ladder will be the most contested object in the house.

12. Warm Corals

Coral pinks instead of the usual blue: punchy walls, layered pink sheets, a sandy accent wall. Sunset coastal rather than midday coastal, and a good match for rooms that face west.

coral coastal bedroom

13. Seaside Shack

Shiplap walls and ceiling, a box bed with storage inside, and a few graceful vintage pieces. Box beds earn their keep in beach-town houses where the linen cupboard never existed.

small coastal bedroom

14. Blue Tropics

A light blue ceiling over white walls and sand-toned floors, with bright blue accents for definition. Painting the ceiling is the trick worth stealing; sky colours overhead genuinely lift a room.

tropical coastal bedroom

15. Coastal Elegance

A mirrored night table, tufted headboard and vintage lamp on the formal side; white curtains, patterned pillows and modern art on the relaxed side. The white base is what lets the two share a room.

elegant coastal bedroom

16. Lakehouse Sanctuary

White walls, bare boards, a jute rug, big glass and blues layered through the bedding. Nothing in this room is expensive. The discipline is in what was left out.

17. White Four-Poster

A white four-poster, rattan furniture and bare boards under big open windows. Farmhouse bones with a coastal wash. The four-poster frame gives an airy room some architecture without adding visual weight.

18. Nautical Blues

A loft converted with white walls, deep blue carpet and glass. Lofts trap heat, so in an Australian summer the insulation and a ceiling fan matter more than the colour scheme. Get those right and the navy carpet is a lovely thing.

blue and white bedroom

19. Ocean Hues

A grey upholstered bed, white sheets with blue trim, brass lamps and one sea painting. A single large artwork sets the theme; the rest of the room only has to agree with it.

coastal bedroom

20. Young Sailor

A timber box bed with drawers underneath, a navy accent wall and a window seat piled with bright pillows. Under-bed drawers are the best toy storage there is, because closing them is a one-second job a child will actually do.

coastal bedroom for boys

21. Bright Bohemian

A DIY pallet bed, textured pillowcases, tab-top curtains and a macrame-trimmed night table. Boho and coastal overlap almost completely, and this room lives happily in the overlap.

boho coastal bedroom

22. Blue Cottage

Baby blue walls, a white shiplap ceiling and an elevated bed with storage underneath, plus a repurposed plank feature wall for character. Small room, no wasted centimetre.

blue coastal bedroom

23. Hanging Bed

A bed hung from exposed beams, swaying gently in front of window walls. It's the hammock idea with a real mattress. The usual rule applies: rated fixings into structure, and generous clearance from the walls.

24. Elegant Mediterranean

Vertical shiplap, jute rugs, white shutters and a blue and white bed under a serious chandelier. Mediterranean coastal is dressier than the Australian kind, and the shutters are the piece carrying it.

blue coastal bedroom

25. Colourful Seas

A grey room brought to life with patterned roman blinds, a blue bed, two seaside paintings and a jute pendant. Proof you can retrofit coastal onto a rented grey box without touching a wall.

colourful coastal bedroom

26. Modern Coastal

White interiors, glass jar lamps, wispy bed curtains, a jute rug and two woven abaca chairs. No shells, no anchors, no paddles. The materials alone say beach, which to my eye is the more sophisticated way to say it.

coastal bedroom

27. White Delight

White on white, saved from blandness by herringbone wallpaper, pompom tassels and natural textures everywhere you look closely. Rooms like this reward the second glance, and they photograph far better than they sound.

white coastal bedroom

28. Charming Shiplap

A window-seat nook in white shiplap with stripes of coastal colour. Shiplap's real talent is making a plain plasterboard corner feel built rather than decorated.

coastal window seat

29. Island Vibes

A shiplap accent wall, glossy boards, a glass dome pendant, a chunky timber night table and palm fronds. The fronds are doing the geography; swap them for gum leaves and the room moves 500 metres inland.

30. Nautical Colours

Crimson and navy with a little Tuscan yellow over clean white. Striped rug, eagle insignia, seagrass bed. This is full traditional nautical, and it's best committed to completely or not at all.

coastal bedroom

31. Lakehouse Cottage

Shiplap, a cornflower rattan headboard, a coffee-toned patterned rug and dandelion accents against white. Gentle colours, layered patiently. Nothing shouts, and the room is better for it.

seaside cottage bedroom

32. Coastal Greens

Mint green shiplap, green bedding and glass decor, with starfish and shell accents. Green coastal reads calmer than blue coastal. I'd thin out the mermaid-and-coral ornaments, though; the wall colour was already doing that work.

charming coastal bedroom

33. Silver Seas

Pearl white walls, framed silver shell prints, a white pallet headboard and pale smoke-grey linen. Silver is an unusual coastal accent, and it lands somewhere between beach house and boutique hotel.

white coastal themed bedroom

34. Seaside Sanctuary

A big bed, a reed storage box doing bench duty, and a pair of paddles on the wall. One prop, used once. That's about the right dose of literal in a coastal room.

coastal bedroom

35. Cosy Grey

Pearl grey shiplap, a stone-textured headboard and greys layered through the linen. Overcast-day coastal rather than postcard coastal, and easier to sleep in for it.

36. Seagrass Bed

A woven seagrass bed frame, one big natural-fibre statement in a bright room. Commercial seagrass is farmed and its harvest regulated, so buy from suppliers who can say where theirs comes from.

seagrass bed

37. Summer Fronds

White shiplap, one oversized frond print, glass jar lamps and green-trimmed white linen. Botanical prints are the cheapest large-format art going; frame a $20 print big enough and the room looks finished.

white coastal bedroom

38. Timeless Coastal

A seashell chandelier, rattan chairs, a wicker-framed bed and white walls. It could be a grandmother's beach house or next year's display home, and that ambiguity is exactly what timeless means in practice.

coastal bedroom

39. Blue to Green

Accents running the full band from blue through green, in stripes, patterns and sea shapes over a white base. Staying inside that blue-green band is the discipline; add one red cushion and the calm breaks.

colourful coastal bedroom

40. Rustic Haven

A raw timber headboard and dresser, a wicker basket and a vintage glass lamp over light wallpaper. Driftwood-adjacent rather than polished. Coastal takes rustic well, because beaches weather everything anyway.

rustic coastal bedroom

41. Shabby Chic Shiplap

An accent wall of unmatched, imperfectly finished planks. You can build it from pallet and fence offcuts over a weekend, or cheat with timber-look wallpaper. From across a bedroom, honestly, the wallpaper wins on effort against effect.

42. Sunshine Cove

Yellow lamps, sheets and carpet over light mint walls, with baby blue lamps as the bridge. Sunny without being loud, and it barely leans on blue and white at all.

yellow coastal bedroom

43. Beachfront Stars

Starfish on the sheets, in the accent wall and around the room, with paddles and turquoise trim. This is a kid-aged theme. Keep the starfish to the washables and the room can grow out of it gracefully.

coastal bedroom

44. Hamptons Glam

A huge shell chandelier, a wave-patterned ceiling, stone-grey walls and coordinated blue linen. Hamptons is coastal with a budget, and the chandelier is where this room spent it.

elegant bedroom

45. Red Sailor

Grain sack fabric, burlap pillows and a carved shabby chic headboard, with red nautical stripes through a bright little room. Farmhouse materials, seaside colours. Small rooms suit this density; the same styling would rattle around in a big one.

charming bedroom

That's the 45. The style survives any budget: white paint, one natural fibre, one stripe of blue, and the strictest possible rationing of shells.
